Refections...
Q. What do you think are the important factors that lead to the rise of the Shang dynasty?
A. They could organise themselves and were excellent craftsmen in creating weapons. The military had chariots, each with an aristocrat archer, a driver and sometimes also a man with a spear. They also built an empire and left behind a garrison force to police local people, by turning a local king into a subservient ally free to manage local matters and by taxing the conquered.
Q. What do you think would have contributed to the downfall of the Shang dynasty?
A. uring the reign of the 10th emperor, the conditions of the Cities and peoples lives began to deteriorate so bad that the emperors own family tried to overthrow him and take command. The problems started showing and the emperors power declined. During the final period of the Dynasty, the country was in a crisis and people granted the use of land in return for homage, fealty and usually military service to his lord.
